Literacy Activity - Speaking Skills
Have the children split into groups of two. Ask them to choose who will be Toad and who will be Frog. Give the children a "conflict" and have them find a way to solve the problem as friends. They will each come up with two to three lines. Have them present their short skit to the class. Example of problems: both want to play different games, someone broke their toy, etc.
Literacy Activity - Listening Skills
Introduce LIfe Cycle of a Frog on felt board. The teacher will have each stage on separate pieces of felt. The teacher would add each piece as the cycle is explained. Next, hand out pieces to children and allow children to add the pieces. This could be an independent center at a later date.
Literacy Activity - Reading Skills
Read Life Cycle of A Frog. Have models of a frog and toad. Pass them around and give the children ample time to talk and play with the pieces. Talk about similarities and differences. You can write them on a white board to reinforce the words. Have two columns labeled frog/toad. Make short sentence strips ( e.g. bumpy skin, smooth skin) with the characteristic discussed. Hand out the word strips and help those who need help reading. Take turns putting the strips under the frog model or the toad model. Allow children to do this as an independent center at another time.
Literacy Activity - Writing Skills
Have the different stages of the life cycle on small pieces of paper. (Frog spawn, tadpole, froglet and frog.) Have a paper plate quartered with sections labeled, 1,2,3,4. Have the children sequence the stages and label each stage. Have life cycle poster available for the children to reference.
